Keto | One Girls Guide to Surviving Aunt Flo

If you are here that means you are 2 things : a lady, and a keto chick. Whether you are new to keto or have been eating this way for a while, you know the struggle some of us face during that lovely time of the month. I lovingly refer to it as “Shark Week” .

If you are anything like me, this time of the month is especially difficult. The week leading up to Shark Week is even more difficult for me. I want to eat everything!! I tried to do my very first water fast during my PMS window thanks to my husband who apparently had a death wish. It didn’t go well. You can watch the struggle in the YouTube video below. Enjoy my sass served up extra salty.

In this post I am going to tell you how I try to stay on plan. Now, that doesn’t mean that I always succeed in fact I usually DON’T! I am a keto work in progress ya feel? But, for the most part I don’t eat an entire bag a Taki’s so really that’s a win. However, sometimes ladies you just have to feed the dragon ok? And that DOES NOT make you a failure, that makes you human. Hop back up on the wagon and get to gettin. Now that we have had a good old fashion pep talk lets dig in!!!!

Trick #1 : Dragon Time Essential Oil

Ok so this isn’t a snack but it is a life saver. I was a huge skeptic but I used it one month and realized I hadn’t lost my shit and so I am now a believer. I put it in my diffuser about 5-7 days before my Auntie is supposed to come over and the dragon stays at bay 99% of the time. Can I get a hallelujah??? You can also put this in a rollerball and put it on your wrists and behind the ears. If I do this, I add a little lavender and the YL blend Joy which makes it a bit less harsh smelling along with some added chill-out benefits.

4 drops in the diffuser with 2 drops of Lavender

3 drops in a rollerball along with 4 drops of Lavender 4 drops of Lemon and  2 drops of Joy fill the rest with carrier oil.

Trick #2 : Sweeties

All the strawberry cheesecake fat bombs!! Make them when you feel good, keep them in the freezer until you need them. Then move them to the fridge for easy access come crave days. Add a few Lillys chocolate shavings in there too add a little extra decadence.

Trick #3 :

Naked Buffalo Wings deep fried in LARD!!!!!!! OH YES Ladies. This one right here is golden. Literally, these babies are soooooo gorgeous along with satisfyingly grease and filling. Also…. here is my wing sauce recipe. It’s pretty delish if I do say so myself. I could drink it. Bible.

1/2 cup of Franks Red Hot Wing Sauce (make sure it’s the wing sauce )

1/2 stick of Butter

5 drops of Stevia ( or to taste )

Let it chill in the fridge for an hour

Dip or Toss your wings

Shove in face.

Trick #4

Cheese Balls!!!! Because you feel like a lazy ball of crap when you are in this window and you just want something easy to pull out and eat. Whip up a cheese “ball”. I put the “ball” in quotes because no one said you actually have to put in the effort to make it look pretty. You aren’t throwing a party. You’re hungry. So I just mix all my ingredients in my amazing kitchen aide and put it in a bowl in the fridge with cling wrap over it. There are plenty of different recipes on Pinterest but here is my go to that easy cheesy.

16 oz cream cheese softened

1/2 stick of butter

1 Tbsp of bacon grease

1/2 cup of chopped tomatoes

1/2 of chives or onions

3/4 cup of bacon

1/2 cup of cheddar cheese

2 tsp of L&P Worcestershire sauce (1g carb per tsp.) – this is not required it just gives an extra kick

Garlic to taste

Salt to taste

Pepper to taste

Eat with pork rinds while watching a Netflix marathon and your heating pad.

Pairs well with alcohol- bc you deserve a glass of sanity right now. It’s really ok!!

side note !!!!

LADIES!!! If you don’t have a kitchen aide what are you doing??? Christmas Birthday Anniversary something… ask for one. I literally use mine all the time.

Here is the exact one I have. The color is shimmery and such a pretty wine color – It took me forever to find. Click it to add to your wish list.

Trick # 5

Pepperoni Chips :

These are freakin delish and super easy if you do them in the microwave – I honestly hate cooking anything in the microwave but, desperate times. I will give you the cook times for oven and microwave.

  1. Just get a pack of regular size pepperoni and lay out 2 paper towels. Lay as many pepperonis on one paper towel as you like and make sure they don’t overlap. Then cover those up with the other paper towel.
  2. Microwave until they are stiff and crispy -start with 60 seconds.
  3. OVEN : preheat to 425Lay the pepperoni slices in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes.Remove the pan from the oven and soak up the excess grease by pressing paper towels against the pepperoni chips. Return the pan to the oven and bake an additional 2 to 4 minutes, until the pepperoni slices are very crispy.
  4. Eat with the cheese ball or by themselves while watching the Notebook for the 12,000 time.

My magical Spinach Dip!!! Literally just throw it all in a pot on the stove on medium heat and stir till all is melted together. Blanch the spinach first and throw it in the pot of yum last.

  • Three 8oz packs of cream cheese
  • 4 oz of Butter
  • 4 tbsp of Bacon Grease
  • 1 cup of shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup of Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1 tbsp of Garlic Powder
  • 8 oz of chopped blanched Spinach
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • eat with Pork Rinds or a spoon ❤

If all else fails just feed the dragon and get back on the wagon tomorrow. Eventually you will be able to get through this week of horror without as many cravings. Be kind to yourself and your body. Chances are you have abused it for a lot longer than you have been showing it love. You will not be able to eat perfect every single day especially if you are new to this way of eating. Remember that. I hope this has helped some of you get an idea of some good go to snacks!! I love you all so much and thank you so much for showing me love!! Thank you also to those of you who have shared my little blog on your Facebook, Pinterest, and given me such positive feedback. You all rock!! Make sure to leave me some comments if you try any of these or have any ideas of your own!! We are here to share 🤗🤗🤗🤗  Make sure to follow me on all my social media ! It’s all linked below 👩🏻‍💻

Love all the recipes in this post! And I’m especially excited about your spinach dip! Do you prefer to have it warmed, or cold?? Hmmm… I have some flackers that it would be very tasty with! Or I’d spread it on a keto bagel! My mouth is watering now…

    • neishalovesit

I love it warm 🤗🤗 makes me feel all the happy things lol Ken eats it however and loves it cold warm or hot 😂

  • Melissa

    Thanks for sharing!

Dragon Time was my BFF before my hysterectomy last year. I could’ve taken YL stock out on Dragon Time. Good stuff!

    • neishalovesit

      For real it’s amazing🤗

  • Linda

How do you cook the spinach dip? I dont see instructions, just ingredients. Mix it all, throw in a casserole dish and warm in the oven?

    • neishalovesit

Throw it all in a pot and melt it together. Blanch the spinach separately and then throw it in

  • Connie

All of these recipes look amazing. Thanks for sharing. Strawberry bombs yum.

  • Annie

I’m past that time for a long time since I had a TAH/BSO (which maybe keto could have prevented/delayed), but I just love your blog. Thanks for the recipes!

    • neishalovesit

So glad you like the recipes!!!! ♥️

  • Susan

I want to know what that yummy tomato-cucumber- loveliness beside the wings was!?!?

    • neishalovesit

Hahah yuuuuummmm I had olive oil salt pepper and a tsp of balsamic

  • Shannon

I tried a water fast and felt the exact same way as you did. I have Hashimoto’s and I read it is hard to fast with Hashis as it can put your body into an autoimmune response. I am ok if I never fast again. It took me 24 hours to recover. My body hated it. Thumbs up to all you fasters who can successfully do it. It was good watching your video snd actually not feeling alone and that someone could relate. I love your blog.
    Thank you for sharing.

    • neishalovesit

Yea girl I suffered and felt horrible!!! I also have hashi so maybe that’s why !

      • Michelle

I never had cravings until the past 4-5 years (salt and chocolate). I’m getting ready to give the keto a go. I’ve enjoyed y’alls videos. Think if I ever tried the water fast after my body gets use to the keto, my body may throw a major flare-up? I’ve had fibro for over 17 years. I’ve pretty much tried to eat a “clean” diet for the past 2 years. Thanks for all these! 😊

  • Suzanne Glapion

At the age of 67, I can still identify with you and your monthly cravings… yes, hard to believe that I have not yet completely gone through menopause and have the hot flashes, cravings, and occasionally Aunt Flo comes for a visit. LOL.. weird, I know. I love your simple to make recipes. They are terrific. I love your honest, down to earth approach to this subject. You are amazing!

    • neishalovesit

Yay I’m so glad you liked it! 🤗

  • Linda

Would love to hear how you make your pork belly. Just picked up 5-lbs, thicked sliced from Costco and don’t know what to do with it! 😂

    • Candi Sikes

I season mine with salt & pepper all over, then lay it on a rack over a cookie sheet. Set oven (mine is gas) to 300° for 2-3 hours depends on thickness (usually mine is 1/2”) at 2 hours I check it and up the temp to 325° for another 30 minutes. It is perfect every time! No mess. Crunchy outside soft inside but DELICIOUS!

  • Janet

The pepperoni chips are also good with cheese on top of them.

  • Willemijn

    Thank you for this!!
Just what I needed. My husband looked at me as if I suddenly spoke Chinese when I told him about my cravings. He apparently thought they would magically disappear when we started lfhc a couple of months ago.
    He regretted it later.. haha.

Lovely recepies, am going to try them all!

  • Leslie

I just love you and Dr. Berry! Y’all are precious ❤️

  • Angela

Thank you for your shark week tips! New to keto, I think i’ve convinced my husband to try it with me.🤞🏻

  • Judi

I’ve never done a 24 hour fast (at least not deliberately) but I fast 16 hours everyday and have for two years. I just never get hungry and I fill up so fast.

  • Susan Heaton Boone

My stepson did a version of your buffalo sauce. He took a stick of butter, a cup of reds hot sauce and simmered it on the stove for about 10 minutes then poured it over uncooked chicken wings, then baked for about 40 minutes. Very good as well if you don’t want to dip them.
